Osteopathy in France is regulated by article 75 of law no. 2002-303 of 4 March 2002 on patients’ rights and the quality of the health system, and by decree no. 2007-435 of 25 March 2007 on the acts and conditions of osteopathic practice.

Under that decree, an osteopath performs manipulations whose sole purpose is to prevent or address functional disorders of the human body, excluding organic disease requiring medical, surgical, pharmaceutical or physical therapeutic intervention.
