What a session looks like

Five stages, always in this order. Nothing happens without you understanding why. This page describes what will actually take place in the room, because knowing what to expect removes most of the apprehension of a first appointment.

Length
45 minutes to an hour depending on the reason
What to wear
Comfortable clothes you can move in. You stay dressed.
What to bring
Your imaging results and the list of your current treatments, if you have them.
  1. 1

    Listening

We start seated, fully dressed, away from the table. What brings you here, since when, what eases it and what makes it worse. Your history, any surgery, the treatments you are currently taking.

If you have imaging results, bring them. It is not required, and it saves time.

This is also when I spot what is not for me to handle. Some situations call for medical advice before anything else, and I say so at this point rather than at the end.

  2. 2

    Assessment

Standing, seated, then lying down. I look at how you hold yourself, how you move, and where mobility is missing.

Come in comfortable clothes you can move in. You stay dressed.

I tell you what I am about to do before I do it. That holds for the rest of the session too.

  3. 3

    Explanation

I tell you what I found, and how it does or does not match what you described. You should leave able to explain to someone else what you were told.

If what I find does not account for what you came with, I say that too. A tidy explanation is more reassuring on the day and leaves you with nothing solid.

  4. 4

    Treatment

Techniques are chosen according to your situation, your age and how you are on the day. They are not the same for a newborn, a pregnant woman, a runner in their forties or an older person.

Nothing happens without your agreement. You can ask me to stop at any point, without having to explain why.

  5. 5

    Advice

We finish with what you can do yourself: a movement, a habit to change, a change to your desk setup. Only a few things, so that you actually do them.

I also tell you what should send you to your doctor, and how soon. And if what I am doing brings nothing after two or three sessions, I say so rather than proposing ten more.

And if it is not for me?

Some situations call for medical advice before an osteopathy consultation. Each reason-to-consult page says which, and I tell you during the first conversation if that is the case.
